Antarctica is the southernmonst continent on Earth and the site of the South Pole. It is widely a frozen wasteland devoid of human settlement aside from a handful of scientific outposts on the coast. Mulder traveled to Antarctica in search of Agent Scully, who had been infected with the black oil and brought to a spaceship buried in the ice.
