Dyer was a logger employed by the Schiff-Immergut Lumber Company. He often butted heads with his fellow logger, Perkins. When the loggers found themselves trapped at their remote camp by a swarm of unknown insects, Dyer suggested making a run for it. Although Perkins advised against it, the other men agreed, and deciding it was "every man for himself," the loggers broke and ran through the woods. Dyer and Perkins didn't get very far before they were attacked and killed by the insects.
