[edit] Teaser

EXCELISIS DEI CONVALESCENT HOME,
WORCESTER, MASS.

It's nighttime. A Victorian mansion housing the Excelsis Dei Convalescent Home is seen. A female employee walks up the entrance stairs and enters the building while from the ground floor window, another two staff members are seen, watching a boxing match on TV. As the female employee enter, the two staff members begin mock boxing, apparently to show off. Unimpressed, she attempts to discuss their work responsibilities. She is informed that a patient died that afternoon, and after asking if anyone bothered to change her room, she gets a sarcastic comment that they left it for her. She picks fresh bed clothing and leaves.

[edit] Background Information

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • Ibotenic Acid, substance identified in the series as an active element of the supplement patients were illicitly recieving and which was responsible for their improvement, is actually one of psychoactive substances found in mushroom fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) but actually, if ingested orally, most of it is converted into an alcaloid Muscimol, which has some of the effects similar to classic psychedelic drugs (LSD, Psylocibine, Mescaline...) but with a slight sedative property as well. It has been used by Siberian shamans to induce trance-like states. The problematic thing in this episode is that most if not all ibotenic acid is converted to muscimol during the preparation process and in liver. Therefore, toxicology would have shown trace amounts of muscimol, not ibotenic acid, in patients' blood.
  • Special effects supervisor, Dave Gauthier flooded the hallway in the climactic bathroom scene with the water from a 3,300 gallon tank.
