In 1998, the Cigarette Smoking Man traveled to Foum Tataouine, Tunisia to deliver news to Conrad Strughold that the X-Files had been reopened. By the time the Cigarette Smoking Man arrived, a cornfield had been planted in the desert and this was where the Cigarette Smoking Man found Strughold. (The X-Files Movie)

In 1999, FBI Special Agent Dana Scully discovered that, during a period between 1991 and 1998, Special Agent Diana Fowley had been making almost weekly trips to and from Tunisia while working for the FBI's Counter Terrorism Unit in Europe, where Agent Fowley had been visiting every European chapter of the Mutual UFO Network, but evidence of Fowley's activities had been covered up. Alex Krycek was imprisoned at Forj Sidi Toui, Tunisia until Marita Covarrubias arranged his release and brought him to Washington, D.C. in 2000. (TXF: "Requiem")

In reality, Tunisia is a country in Africa and is a member of the United Nations but neither of these facts are revealed in The X-Files. Similarly, Tunis is actually the capital of Tunisia and is mentioned in The X-Files Movie but its bearing in Tunisia is not established in the movie.
