Hayes Michel was an FBI agent & partner of Arthur Dales.

He assisted Dales in arresting Edward Skur, who was suspected of being a communist. Later in his apartment, Michel was attacked & killed by Skur via the spider inside his body. He was killed because Skur believed he was connected to what had been done to him. Michel's death prompted Dales to find Skur & find out how he had killed his partner. (TXF: "Travelers")
