[edit] History
Margaret was present when William Scully's ship came back from the Cuban Blockade and she heard the song "Beyond the Sea" as the ship returned, moments before William marched right off up to her and proposed.
Margaret, as well as her husband, wanted their daughter, Dana, to choose a career in medicine but were disappointed by her life decisions. (TXF: "Beyond the Sea") When she was recruited out of medical school by the FBI, they believed it was an act of rebellion, an opinion they would keep until at least March 1992. (TXF: "Pilot")
[edit] Visiting Daughter with Husband
In early 1994, Margaret Scully and her husband, William, visited their daughter, Dana, and had dinner with her. After William Scully suggested to Dana that - if her idea of a good time was picking up dried pine needles - she should treat yourself to having a Christmas tree that she already intended to leave standing all year, Margaret teasingly remarked to her daughter that her own husband had made his suggestion "as if he's an authority on having a good time." Margaret then began trying to help her daughter clear up dishes from their dinner, but Dana kindly refused the help.
When William Scully then made it clear to Margaret that it was time for them to leave, she initially reacted slightly surprised but accepted his intentions and embraced her daughter in a hug, thanking Dana for having them and commenting that the dinner had, as usual, been delicious. As her husband then hugged Dana, Margaret secretly prompted him to ask their daughter how her work was and if it was good, to which Dana replied positively. At the door to Dana's apartment, Margaret agreed with her daughter's recommendation that they "drive carefully" before leaving with a goodbye kiss from Dana.
[edit] Reacting to Husband's Death
Shortly after 1:47am early the next morning, Margaret telephoned Dana in grief, with news that her husband had died about an hour before, from a massive coronary he had suffered.
Margaret and her daughter, Dana, then attended William Scully's funeral. Even though Captain Scully had been entitled to burial at Arlington with full ceremony, the funeral was a small proceeding with only family members present. With tears streaming down her face, Margaret explained to Dana during the ceremony that it was exactly how William had wanted it, nostalgically recalled how he had proposed to her and answered Dana's question of whether her father had been proud of her by stating, "He was your father."
