  • Someone is talking with me on my wall about the return of the X-Files (2016) and is wondering if we will update/revamp/fix the page for that.  I told him I'd go wake up the admins, so here I am.  He has a point after all. 

    I guess check out my wall or the forums where I tried to start a talk about that.

  • Hi, KLessard. I have no problem with the Message Walls. They're cool! :) I got a bit mixed up and thought you were referring to the Article Comments, which really do have a lot of vandalism, swearing, etc. on them and don't show up on the recent changes lists. Do you think we should still have them, nonetheless? It's clearly been shown that Message Walls are popular here (establishing a community consensus for their implementation). Also, I have no problem with them and haven't seen negative comments about them from anyone who does. So, I've taken the liberty of activating them. Apologies for the mix-up.

    • I was referring to both message walls and comments, but I agree it was easy to vandalize the comments section (I deleted a lot of swearing there, and I was on the lookout for this when I was around). But yet, there were such rich conversations as well for users who weren't members or hesitated to contribute but wished to ask questions about the mythology and all. Philosophical discussions, even. I have to admit I miss this. Administrators used it as well to discuss more specifically on a character, for example, using the comments section. If you want clearer laws on what is allowed there (swearing and mean criticism will be deleted, for example), I think it would be preferable than to just prevent people from posting. But I understand your view. Do you feel it is too much responsibilty to keep the comments clean? Because I would be willing to do my part in that respect. 

      As for copyright issues, I sure would like to know more about it. Has the wiki been accused of copyright violations?

      By the way, the badges feature had been previously disabled by consensus (last year), as most users complained and found them silly.

    • Yeah, I suspect it would be too hard to keep the remarks clean on the article comments. Do you know how we would going about keeping a check on them, as they're not visible on the recent changes pages?

    • The way I understand it, if you are following a page, you are notified by e-mail that someone commented or edited. I encountered good and bad comments this way. But it seems to me that it did appear on the wiki activity? I was definitely notified regularly when a very interesting discussion began on Jeremiah Smith last year, and I took an active part in it, and JoseChung as well.

      Are you well connected with Wikia staff? Perhaps you could propose a recent changes notification for comments?

      I have to admit I find this rather strange. Can a former administrator on this wiki make a brand new member both administrator and bureaucrat without letting anyone on the team know about it? DeeMoShow is a she, not a he, and she actually established a nomination process for new administrators.

      We were about to promote a user who has helped us enormously on this wiki.

      And no, DeeMoShow is a he. 

      I never even asked for the promotion. It just happened. He promoted me and demoted himself.

      And yeah it's possible for it to happen.

      I don't want to stop you from promoting the user that is helping enormously, and idk I guess I'm sort of "replacing DeeMoShow".

      But again, it's really weird.

    • I don't know why I was under the impression DeeMoShow was female? Seems to me this rather absent user who'd resigned months ago posed as a female here, but the info has been deleted on the person's page.

      JoseChung is the lead administrator here, and I know his opinion about admins is (I quote): "Rack up the edits and you can earn the right to be an admin. 200 or so. Adding photos. Adding missing character pages. Filling in summaries."

      I have to say I kind of agree Administrators should prove they have what it takes to be granted this responsibility. Or at least the nomination and promotion should be explained to the rest of the team (the user is qualified for such and such reason, etc.).

      Don't get me wrong. I don't know you and have nothing against you. But this is so odd I was under the impression you were a hacker.

      What is your experience on Wikia? Are you active on other wikis?

  • Hey. As you have must likely noticed, I have been updating the cast sections on the episode pages. I have come across several inaccuracies in character and actor names on the Performers and Performer crossover appearances pages. It is very time consuming checking for and fixing these mistakes. Considering that these pages are incomplete and redundant if the episodes and actor pages are completed, I was wondering if they could be deleted. Thanks.

    I have a proposal for myself and others. Dana Scully is my favorite character in the entire series but of course, we also need Fox Mulder for the show's chemistry to be perfect and precise. However, the previous user running this wiki, "Mulder", wrote and basically finished the Fox Mulder page while the Dana Scully page is incomplete. I am wondering if you would like to aid me in adding in the information within the page so it can be beautiful and complete. But it will take time and I may not be able to do everything alone.

    So, would you like to help me finish the page?

    I think the information that should be in the page is the information that involves Scully within the Mythology Story Arc since that is the main story arc within the series. The stand-alone Monster of the Week stories should be separate pages like the "Fox Mulder's work on the X-Files" pages. Instead we should make a "Dana Scully's work on the X-Files" and a "Dana Scully's work off the X-Files" pages like Mulder's page. 

    This should be a fun experience. But should we all split up when making the page? Like you could fill in the information about Dana Scully during the last half of season 2 and the first half of season 3, I fill in the remainder of season 3 and fill in season 4, and JoseChung fills in season 5 and season 6 and so on so forth. What do you think? Should we split up like that or do something else?

    • I'd be glad to help. You seem to have a clear notion of how you'd like the structure to be (it sounds good to me), so I suggest you create sections and rearrange the page the way you see fit (even if that requires leaving blank sections) and then we can fill in the blanks? That sounds like the best way to collaborate but follow your idea at the same time. You could send us messages on specific sections you'd like us to help you with. I would give you green card on this, but we need Jose Chung's input first.

      In my opinion, the founder Mulder sometimes entered into too much detail, I don't know how much precision or concision are required for those main character pages. I recently finished the concise "Samantha Mulder" page on the French wiki and couldn't believe how many details and pictures this wiki's founder had put in his for this single character (like a picture for every time we see a childhood photo of Samantha on screen -the "Samantha holding a flower while wearing a frilly dress" still cracks me up). Too much information can get exhausting to go through. Quality, representative pictures are also important, I think. Main character pages should be a general biography and not a retelling of every episode the character is involved in, if you see what I mean (especially for Mulder and Scully).

      If you want to assign specific seasons to me, I have become more acquainted with seasons 3 and 4 via the Black Oil mythology DVD, maybe I'd be better at these.

    • Alright. I set up the sections in the Dana Scully page where information needed to be. 

      They are in the style of Heading 2 like "Continuation of the X-Files", "Closing of the X-Files" e.t.c. So for the "Continuation of the X-Files" heading, there will be information from the second half of season two to the end of season 5 with titles using Heading 3. Like under the "Continuation of the X-Files" we must place information about she and Mulder's relationship to Mulder's death and resurrection, the truth about her abduction in season 3, the hunt for the Syndicate, her nasal cancer reveal in season 4, and everything else that is mythology related all the way to season 5.

      For "Closing of the X-Files", there will information about The X-Files: Fight The Future

      For "Returning to the X-Files", we place in info from season 6 to season 9.

      For "Leaving the FBI" we place in info from the end of season 9 to The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

      So, under these headings, we must use Heading 3 for titles and then place information under them. Like for "Closing of the X-Files", we will place in something like "Abduction to Antarctica" in Heading 3 then place info under that heading.

      So I see you want to do the seasons 3 and 4 mythology with Scully. That's perfect. I guess I will finish season 2 and then probably do season 8 and 9 if JoseChung doesn't want to do those.

      I would like to see how detailed you want the information to be, so I'll wait and see some of your work, and then write and add my text following your pattern. I can go from Nisei all the way to Redux II, since it's all related, and maybe you can extend your text to Paper Clip?

      I think I'd be interested to work on the "Leaving the FBI" section as well, there was some good interview material I read clarifying this in "The Complete X-Files" book.

      Also, will you delete some of the other existing text or use and edit it? We should be careful not to repeat things around.


      While we're here, I began wondering about symbolism in the X-Files and thought such a page would be interesting but I'm not sure what the best way to approach the subject would be. If you or Jose Chung have any ideas, let me know.

      And by the way, I sent an email to the Eat the Corn site's author and invited him to join us.
