- Because the production crew of The X-Files were uncertain whether this would be the final episode of the series, Chris Carter brought back several characters from the series' pilot episode to act as a bookend. These reappearing characters are Detective Miles, Billy Miles and Theresa Hoese (named Theresa Nemman in the pilot episode). The "Cigarette Smoking Man" also first appeared in the series' pilot episode but, unlike the aforementioned characters, he reappeared many times between that first episode and this one.
- This episode features the Cigarette Smoking Man's penultimate appearance in The X-Files. He would later return in the series' final episode, "The Truth".
- A line of dialogue in "DeadAlive", an episode of The X-Files' eighth season, dates the events of this episode to the month of May.
