Richard-Matheson-S02E01

Richard Matheson was a US Senator who took a liking to Mulder and was interested in his work at the FBI. After the X-Files were shut down in 1994, Matheson prompted Mulder to visit the Arecibo observatory in Puerto Rico to continue his search for the truth. Eventually, Matheson distanced himself from Mulder because he felt his political career may be in jeopardy. (TXF: "Little Green Men")

Later that year, Mulder went to Matheson's office in an attempt to contact him to gain information about Scully's abduction, but he was intercepted by X, who told him that Matheson could not give him the information he wanted without risking himself. (TXF: "Ascension")

While on the intelligence committee, Matheson learned of the murdered Japanese scientists. Later, Mulder came to him for advice after he had investigated the Talapus on the east coast. Matheson encouraged Mulder to return the satellite photos, asking Mulder to trust him. He gave Mulder an alternative investigation by giving him the name and location of the murdered scientists. (TXF: "Nisei")

Matheson did not return Mulder's phone calls after that, rather, his aides told Mulder Matheson was out of the country. (TXF: "731")

Matheson was directly involved in an illicit deal concerning nanotechnology as part of S.R. 819, which claimed to bring new technologies to undeveloped countries. Mulder met him early in the morning at his house to investigate a mysterious illness contracted by Walter Skinner. Matheson defended the bill and refused to be involved in Mulder's investigation. The incident further soured relations between Mulder and Matheson.

Matheson later entered a warehouse to find Doctor Kenneth Orgel, only to see him killed by the nanobot virus by Alex Krycek, hidden upstairs. Matheson waited for Mulder, and insisted it was too late for him to stop what was happening to Skinner. (TXF: "S.R. 819")
