Dr. Sandoz
Steven Sandoz (played by Murray Rubinstein) was a professor at the American University in Washington, D.C. who knew Dr. Solomon Merkmallen. Sandoz believed that life originated from another planet and dedicated study to it. In particular, he believed Navajo writing was important and got to know Albert Hosteen.
In 1999, Merkmallen discovered a spacecraft on the coast of Africa and tried to meet with Sandoz, who was known for promoting the idea that life on Earth was alien in origin. Instead, Sandoz found Merkmallen dead in his lab and fled. Sandoz went to New Mexico to find Hosteen again, only to discover Hosteen's cancer had gotten worse during the attempts to decipher the alien artifact. He saw Agent Scully at Hosteen's bedside and ran, but then talked with her when he was cornered. When the hospital decided it could not do more, Hosteen was released home and Sandoz attended a healing ceremony for him while Scully left. Sandoz called Scully later to tell her his theory that the writing was actually data on the human genome, however, Alex Krycek had followed Sandoz there and murdered him during the call.
