Monte Propps was a criminal who was captured in 1988, thanks to a monograph about serial killers and the occult written by Fox Mulder.

In March 1992, FBI Special Agent Dana Scully mentioned to Division Chief Scott Blevins that she had learned of Propps' capture and that Mulder's influence on the case had added to her knowledge of Mulder's reputation. (TXF: "Pilot", "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man")

Background Information[]

  • Monte Propps is never seen in The X-Files and is not mentioned again after the series' pilot episode, except when the same scene re-appears in "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man".
  • He is mentioned in the Novel 'Agents of Chaos' in which a 17 year old Mulder writes the Profile in question. It is revealed his full name is Montgomery Propps and he has a brother Earl Roy Propps.
  • The character's name is spelled as "Monte Propps" in the script of the pilot episode, but subtitles for that episode that can be accessed in The X-Files' Season 1 DVD show the character's name spelt as "Monty Props" and the Season 4 DVD subtitles for "Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man" spell the name as "Monty Propps". In IDW comic The X-Files Season 10 issue #6 the name is spelled identically to the pilot episode script.
