[edit] Summary

Teaser

A family of four is at an amusement park. The parents and their baby are happy, but their eight year old son is unusually unhappy. When the baby's balloon floats away, the father gives the older son's balloon to the baby. When the older son becomes mad, however, the father simply says "We'll get you another one." When the mother is in the bathroom, the strap she used to hold the baby comes undone, and the balloon floats, under its own power, out of the bathroom with the baby in tow. Another family, taking a picture with the parks mascot, sees the child near the parks train tracks. The mother and father arrive in time to see their baby run over by the train. While both are crying, the eight year old looks on angrily and the balloon returns to his hand.

Act One

Mulder is showing Scully pictures taken at the amusement park, showing the baby near the train tracks. When asked why this is relevant to the X-Files, Mulder points out that a balloon doesn't stay close to the ground, nor does it blow sideways when the wind blows in the completely opposite direction. After taking the photo to a lab, it is shown that a force was dragging the balloon, enticing the baby to it.

[edit] Background Information

The original Calusari were an ancient Italian cult (see "Ecstasies; Deciphering the Witches Sabbath" by Carlo Ginzburg or "Italian Witchcraft", page 80 by Raven Grimassi). It is clear that horsemen cults existed as far back as Ancient Roman times. (For further information refer to chapter 5 of "The Cults of the Roman Empire" by Robert Turcan, Blackwell Publishing 1996.)
