The Falls at Arcadia, sometimes called The Falls, was a planned community near San Diego, California. It was built in 1991 by Gene Gogolak and was voted one of the top planned communities in California for six years running as of 1999. The Falls was also built directly on top of an old landfill.

The residents were kept in line by a strict set of rules such as:

  • Move-ins were to be completed by 6:00 PM.
  • No pets were allowed that weighed more than 16 pounds.
  • Yard aesthetics were strictly enforced, such as a ban on tacky items (pink flamingo, whirlygig) and basketball hoops.
  • Each neighbor was responsible for keeping a lamppost on their portion of sidewalk lit.

There was no rule against reflecting pools.

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were sent undercover to investigate the mysterious disappearances of a number of residents. They discovered that the strict rules were so strictly-enforced because of Gogolak's megalomaniacal stranglehold on the community and his ability to summon the Ubermenscher that would destroy non-conforming residents. The Ubermenscher ultimately turned on Gogolak and killed him, destroying itself at the same time. Despite Gogolak's death, life at The Falls went on, albeit less nervously.
