The United States Air Force (or USAF) is the aerospace branch of the United States armed forces and one of the seven uniformed services. Formerly part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947. The USAF is the largest and most technologically advanced modern air force in the world, with over 9,000 aircraft in service and about 352,000 men and women on active duty. Since World War I, the USAF and its predecessors have taken part military conflicts throughout the world.
