The Vietnam War was a conflict in Vietnam from the late 1950s until 1975 where the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, The Philippines and South Korea attempted to stop the spread of communism into southeast Asia by assisting the government of South Vietnam in fighting the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army. The Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China, and the Eastern European countries of the Warsaw Pact provided military advisors, weapons and equipment to North Vietnam.
The war was considered to be an offshoot conflict of the Cold War. (TXF: "Redux")
To honor those who fell in the war, the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial was erected in Washington, D.C. (TXF: "Never Again", "Unrequited")
Several Americans who did not want to be sent to Vietnam to fight in the war fled to Canada. (TXF: "Darkness Falls")
